Ros beiaard

Veluwe Hotel De Beyaerd is named after Ros Beiaard, a folkloric horse from the saga of the Four Heemskinderen.

The Four Heemskinderen

Knight Aymon was a loyal fief of Charlemagne. He is said to have been married to Aye, a sister of Charlemagne. She bore her husband four sons: Ritsaert, Writsaert, Adelaert and Reinout. Of the foursome, Reinout was the strongest. According to old tradition, their father gave each of the four sons a horse as a gift. However, Reinout was so strong that he accidentally killed his riding animal. Then he was offered a second horse, but he broke the animal's loins on the first ride.

Knight Aymon knew no advice. Since a knight had to have a horse anyway, he took his son to a castle. Here the notorious stallion Baiaard (the Ros Beiaard) was confined. It was a passionate beast feared by all and had never found its master. Heroically, Reinout faced the roaring horse, which immediately threw him several metres away with a hefty kick. Reinout, however, would not give up. After a heroic struggle, he succeeded in subduing the fearsome horse to his will. From then on, the Ros Beiaard would blindly obey knight Reinout.

Unfortunately, a serious feud arose between Charlemagne and knight Aymon and his sons. During a game of chess, a heated argument arose between Reinout and his nephew Louis, Charlemagne's son. The temperamental Reinout knocked over all the chess pieces and gave his opponent a fatal thump on the head with the heavy silver chessboard. Charles vowed to avenge Louis. Charles and his army pursued the four brothers, who fled on the back of the steed Beiaard and hid in the inaccessible Ardennes forest. From their strong castle of Montalbaen, the four knights defended themselves against their uncle's attacking army bands.

Meanwhile, knight Aymon had fallen into the hands of Charlemagne. Charles was only willing to make peace and release Aymon if the devilish Ros Beiaard was handed over to him. Reinout initially refused to accept this proposal, but eventually succumbed to his mother's pleas. Since the horse had the reputation of being invincible, Charles decided to drown it. Heartbroken and suffering, Reinout had to watch idly as it was taken to the river and thrown into the water with heavy millstones around its neck. Twice the horse crushed the stones with one hoof beat and swam back to the bank, where Reinout stood watching. On a third attempt, the stones were weighted down, but still the Ros Beiaard resurfaced, eagerly awaiting its master. Reinout could no longer watch the horse's suffering and turned his head away. Thinking his master wanted nothing more from him, the noble animal let himself drown.

Especially in the Maas valley, many stories keep the saga of the Vier Heemskinderen (the four brothers) alive. The river in which the Ros Beiaard was drowned is identified with the Meuse. The castle of Montalbaen, according to some, is Montauban sous Buzenol, near Virton, where there are indeed ruins. But Poilvache castle is also associated with it. Le rocher Bayard in Dinant.

According to legend, the rock was split by the hoof of the Cheval Bayard.
