ROS BEIAARD

Veluwe Hotel De Beyaerd is named after the Ros Beiaard, the legendary horse from the medieval saga of the Four Sons of Aye.

According to tradition, Knight Aymon was a loyal vassal of Charlemagne. Together with his wife Aye, he had four sons: Ritsaert, Writsaert, Adelaert, and Reinout. Of the four, Reinout was the strongest. After he accidentally killed a horse twice due to his immense strength, his father took him to the notorious stallion Baiaard. This untamed horse had never accepted a master. After a heroic battle, Reinout eventually managed to tame the animal. From that moment on, horse and rider were inseparable.

Later, a fierce struggle arose between Charlemagne and the four brothers. After a quarrel in which Reinout mortally wounded his cousin Louis, the brothers fled. Riding on the back of the horse Beiaard, they repeatedly managed to escape Charlemagne's troops and found safe haven in the castle of Montalbaen.

Eventually, Knight Aymon was captured. Charlemagne was only willing to make peace if the horse Beiaard was handed over to him. With a heavy heart, Reinout agreed to this. Charlemagne decided to drown the horse by hanging heavy millstones around its neck. Twice, the horse Beiaard managed to free itself and swim back to its master. Only when Reinout turned away, because he could no longer bear to see the suffering of his faithful companion, did the horse allow itself to drown, according to legend.

The legend of the Four Sons of Aymon still lives on, especially in the Meuse Valley. Various places, such as the rock Le Rocher Bayard near Dinant and the ruins of Montalbaen, are still associated with the story. The name De Beyaerd is a tribute to this special legend and to the Ros Beiaard, which symbolizes strength, loyalty, and courage.
